Throughout its history, Emmanuel has maintained a close relationship with both the Virginia Theological Seminary, as well as St. Stephen's (now known as St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes). In 1968, Emmanuel established the Emmanuel Episcopal Preschool. Emmanuel's Preschool is located within Emmanuel and serves children aged two through five years old.
The church building was completed and formally consecrated by Bishop Hobart of New York in 1817. The first part-time pastor, Nathan Bennett Burgess, was hired in 1801. The church was slightly enlarged and formally renamed Emmanuel Church, which is Latin for "God is with us", in 1869. The church fell on hard times in the late nineteenth century.
