The restaurant was founded by Leon Finney Sr., originally of Mississippi, in 1940. [1] It was one of the earliest barbecue establishments in Chicago. Along with other restaurants like Lem's Bar-B-Q, Leon's popularized the "Delta style" of barbecue that predominates in the South Side.
As of 1988, it had two additional locations in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and Rolling Meadows, Illinois. [5] It originally had a limited menu including hamburgers, ribs, barbecue chicken and sandwiches. The restaurant was established before the proliferation of smoked, South Side-style barbecue. Smoked meats were eventually added to the menu in 2011. [4]

During the 2000s, Sonny's was the largest BBQ restaurant chain in the United States, with about 150 locations across nine states. In 2011, the company had 125 operating franchised restaurants. In 2012, the company moved its headquarters to Winter Park, Florida and in 2013, the company changed its name from Sonny's Real Pit-Bar-B-Q to Sonny's BBQ.
