Vũng Tàu is the only petroleum base of Vietnam where crude oil and natural gas exploitation activities dominate the city's economy and contribute principal income to Vietnam's budget and export volume. With the exception of the Côn Đảo islands, all of Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province was the Phước Tuy province after merging Bà Rịa Province and Vũng Tàu Town in the South Vietnam before 1975, including the Spratly Islands was a part of Phước Hải commune, Đất Đỏ district then (now is a townville of Long Đất district).
The town was founded on 2 June 1994 from the split of the district of Châu Thành into the districts of Châu Đức, Tân Thành, and Bà Rịa. Many provincial agencies have been relocated from Vũng Tàu to Bà Rịa. By 2007, this city was a 3rd-class municipality in Vietnam [4] and was upgraded to 2nd-class municipality on 27 November 2014.
