State Trunk Highway 49 (often called Highway 49, STH-49 or WIS 49) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs north–south in central and southeast Wisconsin from Wittenberg to Lomira. The highway was initially designated in 1917, but it had not been extended to its current length until the 1950s.
As an expressway, the highway passes just south of Hatley and turns southeast for about four miles (6 km) before turning east again at the northern terminus of WIS 49. [9] The highway enters Shawano County about one mile (1.6 km) east of this junction. [9] WIS 29 passes north and around Wittenberg.
Wisconsin Highway 318 was planned to be extended south totaling 6 miles in length, forming a complete bypass and ending at Wisconsin Highway 59. The highway passes through Hazelhurst and becomes a four-lane undivided highway. The highway then passes through Minocqua and Woodruff.
