The 5.2 L Magnum, released in 1992, was an evolutionary development of the 318 cu in (5.2 L) LA engine with the same displacement. The 5.2 L was the first of the Magnum upgraded engines, followed in 1993 by the 5.9 L V8 and the 3.9 L V6.
The 318 is the most common version of the A engine, produced from 1957 through 1966 in the US and 1967 in some export markets when it was replaced in all markets by the LA 318. Only Plymouth used this 318 in 1957 and 1958, but it was shared with Chrysler from 1959 on and Dodge from 1960 on. [ 5 ]
A narrower range of engines was offered: the base power plant was the 225 cu in (3.7 L) slant-6, now with top-fed hydraulic tappets, and the 318 cu in (5.2 L) and 360 cu in (5.9 L) LA-series V8s. The slant-6 was replaced by the 3.9 L (237 cu in) V6 for 1988; in 1992, it and the V8s became Magnum engines.
It was available with the 318 cu in (5.2 L) "LA" series small block V8 and three versions of 400 cu in (6.6 L) big-block V8. The standard engine was the 360 cu in (5.9 L) 2-bbl small block. The code E58 4-bbl and dual exhaust high-performance version (225 hp) were optional. [ 23 ]
In 1992, the multiport fuel-injected Magnum 318 was the standard engine, while the LA 360 with TBI was still offered as an option. In 1993, the Magnum 360 replaced the LA engine. Many manual transmissions were offered throughout the years, starting with the A-230 three-speed and ending with the A-535 five-speed in 1992.
