The Black Fork Mountain Wilderness Area is located in the U.S. states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Created by an act of Congress in 1984, the wilderness covers an area of 13,139 acres (53 km²). The Arkansas portion contains 8,430 acres (34.1 km 2) and the Oklahoma portion contains 5,140 acres (20.8 km 2).
The Cache River National Wildlife Refuge is a 68,993 acre (223 km 2) (2014) wildlife refuge in the state of Arkansas managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). [3] The refuge is one of the Ramsar wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention signed in 1971.
Mountain Fork, also known as the Mountain Fork of the Little River, is a 98-mile-long (158 km) [1] tributary of the Little River in western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma in the United States. Via the Little and Red rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River .
Contiguous with the refuge on the east is the Big Lake Wildlife Management Area, owned by the state of Arkansas. It comprises 12,320 acres (49.9 km 2) and is open for hunting deer, waterfowl, and small game. The wildlife management area consists mostly of bottomland hardwood forests.
The refuge consists of 4,522 acres (18.30 km 2) acres of agricultural land, 4,201 acres (17.00 km 2) of bottomland hardwood forest including wetland sloughs and oxbow lakes, 6,188 acres (25.04 km 2) of land being reforested, and 111 acres (0.45 km 2) of roads, levees, and other man-made facilities.
