Ave Sangria is a Brazilian rock band and one of the leading names of the 1970s psychedelic music scene of Pernambuco, along with Alceu Valença, Flaviola e O Bando do Sol, Lula Côrtes, Marconi Notaro and Lailson.
The band is named after its lead singer María Zardoya, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She and her partner Josh Conway, the drummer, met at a show at the Kibitz Room, the bar and music venue inside Canter's Deli in Los Angeles. [ 3 ]
The band has been mentioned or featured in various newspapers and magazines: the Vancouver Sun, New Times, BLU Magazine (an underground hip hop magazine), BAM Magazine, La Banda Elastica Magazine, and the Los Angeles Times calendar section. The band is also the subject of a chapter in the book It's Not About a Salary, by Brian Cross. [11]
The band started out as students of the Eastside Café, [2] a community space in El Sereno, Los Angeles, where they took Son Jarocho classes. [3] Influenced by music from Veracruz, Mexico and eager to teach others about it, they started formally playing in 2005. [ 4 ]
