Bora Bora (French: Bora-Bora; Tahitian: Pora Pora) is an island group in the Leeward Islands in the South Pacific. The Leeward Islands comprise the western part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, which is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic in the Pacific Ocean. Bora Bora has a total land area of 30.55 km 2 (12 sq mi).

Prior to the construction of the airport, Papeete was served by Short Sandringham "Bermuda" flying boat seaplanes operated by Reseau Aerien Interinsulaire (RAI). There was a connecting service via Bora Bora Airport (BOB) to Los Angeles with an en route stop in Honolulu flown by Transports Aeriens Intercontinentaux (TAI), which was serving Bora Bora in 1960 with Douglas DC-7C propliners. Hotel Bora Bora first opened in 1961 [6] [7] and was designed by Hammarberg and Herman. The original design featured 18 thatched-roof huts. [8] Hotel Bora Bora closed in October 2008 for reconstruction. [9] It was scheduled to reopen in 2011, however, it currently remains closed indefinitely. [10]
