X-Men/Spider-Man #3 was the best Ben Reilly story published post-Clone Saga, at least before Ben Reilly: Spider-Man by J.M. DeMatteis. Heard this exchange in their 90s animated series voices, too, and considering I watched the X-Men team-up episodes again earlier this week . . . it sure stirred something.
Probably the most classic/iconic panel for Ben since his return. I see it everywhere, even in articles that get the context wrong and think it’s from the 90s Clone Saga. I also sadly agree with Huntsman Spider.
The mini almost gets points for not making Ben look horrible (or at least any worse), but it is pretty much four issues of meh. I wish Foxe had imbued the story with a bit more pathos and emotion, but I get not everyone can be JM DeMatteis.
Well going by what Ben said in ASM 60 everything is good with them but it was also established in that issue that Ben has become quite the liar so who knows. I'd lean towards yes because as Stiillanerd theorized a bit back teaming Peter & MJ up to take on Ben & Janine seems like something Marvel wants to do.
Well with ASM 60 out I just have to roll my eyes. They've doubled down in everything that proves they don't know what makes Ben Reilly tick and despite basically no one buying curse of Kaine are marrying themselves to this Chasm concept. Years of "this next story will be better."
Ben's in the backseat for the duration of the story, despite it ostensibly being about him and how this should prove Chasm is a concept that should stay. When Chasm first debuted, they made some likenings to Venom, and screwed up Eddie Brock may have been back then, he was mostly in charge of the stuff he got into.
Same, though I wish we'd figured out more about the Diogenes Initiative other than it turning out to be the Archangel Gabriel's Earthly project or otherwise having ties to him. That said, the forces of heaven and hell taking an interest in Ben Reilly's severely damaged and corroded soul was an interesting angle.
Ben Reilly as the Sensational Spider-Man vs. Carolyn Trainor as Doctor Octopus was cool, especially given how they were both related to her father Seward Trainor and Carolyn's resentment of Ben for seeming to have replaced her in Seward's trust and affections, never mind that despite his mentorship with Ben, he turned out to have been working ...
If only they hadn't just messed him up even worse later. I did like his appearances in Christopher Cantwell's Iron Man, though, and his bit of questioning whether or not a creator deity truly existed if someone like him could be engineered into existence through science was fairly interesting, at least on a philosophical level.
The Other variant covers brought the Ben costumes in full force. Aguirre's run had Mr. Hyde create Spider-Men and one of them was dressed as Ben, and then in his own OMD tie-in we see Ben getting impaled by the glider when we're talking about Peter's worst moments. PAD had Peter adopt the Ben Reilly alias during Civil War.
