In December 1972, concerned about the geological conditions of the Teton River Canyon, USGS geologist David Schleicher wrote about the Teton Dam while it was still under construction, "A final point is that flooding in response to seismic or other failure of the dam—probably most likely at the time of highest water—would make the flood of ...
The Teton Basin Project on the upper Teton River in eastern Idaho comprised the Teton Dam and reservoir. The dam failed on June 6, 1976 as the 288,250-acre-foot (0.35555 km 3 ) reservoir was being filled, leading to extensive flooding in the Minidoka project area. [ 7 ]
Caused loss of generation, dam failed by overtopping in a 1-in-2,000 year flood [6] 1975: Teton Dam: Idaho United States: The dam foundations washed away and a wave swept aside everything in its path, including two towns, killing at least eleven people, and thousands of cattle. The most famous modern incident along the river occurred on June 5, 1976 when the earthen Teton Dam in Teton Canyon collapsed, killing 11 people in the valley below. The force of water due to the dam failure destroyed the lower part of the Teton River, washing away riparian zones and reducing the canyon walls.
The dam was removed in the interest of fish passage and since the hydropower facilities had become obsolete. The dam was destroyed by dynamite at 6:35 PM on August 19, 1963, following two prior detonations that day which had failed to collapse the structure. [ 2 ]
In June 1976, most of the buildings in Wilford were swept away by a flood that resulted from the catastrophic failure of the recently built Teton Dam. Soon after the dam's failure it was reported that "154 [Wilford] houses were intact or in pieces, riding the fifteen-mile-an-hour crest" of the flood. [4] Five residents of Wilford died in the flood.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “the Teton Pass Highway offers a critical connection for commuters and recreationists traveling from Victor, Idaho and Jackson, Wyoming ...
Even the 1976 failure of Teton Dam as it filled for the first time did not diminish Reclamation's strong international reputation in water development circles. [8] However, this first and only failure of a major Reclamation Bureau dam led to subsequent strengthening of its dam-safety program to avoid similar problems.
