The University of Bristol is a red brick Russell Group research university in Bristol, England. [8] It received its royal charter in 1909, [ 9 ] although it can trace its roots to a Merchant Venturers ' school founded in 1595 and University College, Bristol , which had been in existence since 1876. The building is named for the Fry family who donated land and funds to the university at its founding in 1909, when Lewis Fry was Chairman of the College Council. [3] [4] The Fry family was prominent in England, especially Bristol, in the Society of Friends, and as J. S. Fry & Sons in the confectionery business in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
