In 1969, I-95 was extended further south from Roanoke Rapids to exit 145, in Rocky Mount (later used for North Carolina Highway 4 [NC 4]). In 1973, I-95 was completed from St. Pauls to the South Carolina state line. By the mid-1970s, I-95 had two gaps along its route in Fayetteville and Kenly–Gold Rock.
U.S. Route 117 (US 117) was established in 1926 to run for 159 miles (256 km) from Norlina, through the towns of Warrenton, Roanoke Rapids, and Murfreesboro; from there it went north into Virginia through Franklin, Suffolk, Portsmouth, and Norfolk to Virginia Beach.

Interstate 95 leads north to Emporia and south to Rocky Mount, providing a highway alternative to US 301.
