Ernst Haenchen grew up as the youngest son of a government official along with his two siblings in the West Prussian county town Czarnikau. [3] In 1914 he began studying theology at the Humboldt University of Berlin, which he had to interrupt in the same year after the outbreak of the First World War.
He worked over many years in the international liturgy commission of German-speaking countries (IAG) [3] and collaborated with Georg Braulik on a Deuteronomy commentary for the Hermeneia series of Fortress Press. [4] Lohfink worked towards understanding, dialogue and collaboration of Christians and Jews who share the same texts.
