This planetary gear train consists of a sun gear (yellow), planet gears (blue) and carrier (green) inside a ring gear (red) An epicyclic gear train (also known as a planetary gearset) is a gear reduction assembly consisting of two gears mounted so that the center of one gear (the "planet") revolves around the center of the other (the "sun").
Planetary differential used to drive a chart recorder c. 1961. The motors drive the Sun and annular gears, while the output is taken from the planet gear carrier. This gives 3 different speeds depending on which motors are on. Non-automotive uses of differentials include performing analogue arithmetic. Two of the differential's three shafts are ...
An electronic limited-slip differential will typically have a planetary or bevel gear set similar to that of an open differential and a clutch pack similar to that in a torque sensitive or gerotor pump based differential. In the electronic unit the clamping force on the clutch is controlled externally by a computer or other controller.
VTD adds a twin planetary center differential to the clutch and therefore has a static, starting torque split calculated on the planetary gear ratio, with the most common being 45:55. The active clutch operation is similar to the ACT system, although the clutch is used to suppress differential action instead of as the differential itself.
The sun and planet gear is a method of converting reciprocating motion to rotary motion and was used in the first rotative beam engines. It was invented by the Scottish engineer William Murdoch , an employee of Boulton and Watt , but was patented by James Watt in October 1781.
A foot clutch was used for standing starts, gear selection was using a hand lever, helical gears were used (to reduce noise) and the gears used a constant-mesh design. A planetary gearset was also used in the 1908 Ford Model T, which was fitted with a two-speed manual transmission (without helical gears).
In 4x4 versions, the planetary gear center differential with viscous-type limited slip is integrated in to the rear half of the gearbox. The 4x4 system is of full-time type with a static torque split of 34% front, 66% rear (similarly to Type 9 4x4 models). The MT75 has five speeds and reverse.
It consists of 2 pinions that mesh with each other. One of these pinions meshes with the sun gear, the other with the ring gear. As a results, the gearset generates different ratios and the sun gear rotates in the same direction as the ring gear when the planetary gear carrier is stationary. This made it possible to manage 8 speeds with 3 gearsets.
