Iowa 187 was formed in January 1931. Originally, the highway began at an intersection with US 20 four miles (6.4 km) east of Winthrop.It headed north along a section line to Lamont.

Wehrenberg's Cinema Four Center in St. Charles was the first multiplex in the St. Louis area. In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the circuit started building megaplexes of ten or more screens.
US 161 was an original U.S. Highway; it and the rest of the system were designated in 1925 and were signed by the summer of 1926. [2] US 161 replaced parts of two primary roads in eastern Iowa – Primary Road No. 40, which was known as the Red Ball Route, from Keokuk to Cedar Rapids, and Primary Road No. 28, parts of which were known as the Red X Route. The Iowa 561 freeway was dedicated and opened to traffic on December 1, 1982. [63] After the new highway opened, there remained two segments of the old road–a short section between I-80 and Mount Joy and a longer stretch from Mount Joy to De Witt. The latter road was renamed Iowa 956 and the former Iowa 960; both of which were unsigned highways.
