The University Place School District #83, located in University Place, Washington, between Tacoma and Puget Sound, was officially established on November 2, 1895. [2] The district includes most of University Place and portions of Fircrest and Tacoma. [3] Student enrollment in October 2009 was 5,616. [4]
The school opened in 1957 as a joint junior-senior high school at the corner of 40th and Grandview. In 1962, a high school facility was built about 500 yards east of the junior high that then extended up 40th Street. This separated the schools from 8th-9th grade for the junior high and 10th-12th grade for the senior high school.
University Place received its name in the 1800s when the University of Puget Sound, a private liberal-arts college in North Tacoma, purchased land along the primary north–south route of Grandview Drive. The school sought to build a new campus there, but ended up selling the land back to the city for about $11,000.
