Jun. 9—ELKHART — Island Park in Elkhart saw the return of a time-honored event Friday and Saturday. The 44th Annual Rhapsody Arts and Music Festival took place over the course of both days.
Elkhart County is known as the RV Capital of the World. The Ruthmere Museum was the mansion once occupied by Albert R. and Elizabeth Baldwin Beardsley, the descendants of the city's founder. This museum features a world-class fine arts collection and a historical recreation of the home as it was in the 1910s and 20s.
The Elkhart County Fairgrounds hosts over 150 events during year when the Fair is not being held. The fairgrounds consists of 384 acres (1.55 km 2) with 70 buildings and over 300 permanent RV sites in addition to 600 temporary RV sites. [4] One of the most popular non-fair events are RV travel rallies.
During the mid-1990s the city of Elkhart became involved, obtaining with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1996 restoration work began and the theatre was restored to its 1920 design. The Elco Commission for the Performing Arts was created in 1997. [3]
