The academic year follows a 4–1–4 schedule of two four-course semesters in the autumn and spring plus what is known as a "Winter Term" session in January. In December 2005, Middlebury College and the Monterey Institute signed an affiliation agreement that established a formal relationship between the two institutions. Under that agreement, the Monterey Institute board of trustees was reconstituted to include 13 members, nine of them with Middlebury connections and four former members of the Monterey Institute board.

Middlebury College was chartered in 1800 and was Vermont's first college to grant an academic degree in 1802. Castleton University, which today is a campus of Vermont State University, was considered to be the oldest institution of higher learning in Vermont, having been originally chartered as a grammar school in 1787.

In 1915, the School of German was founded as the first of Middlebury Language Schools by a German professor from Vassar College. [1] The most recent School, the English Language School, was established in 2022. Middlebury Language Schools have historically all been conducted at the College's campus in Middlebury, Vermont.
