The township is in northern Manistee County and is bordered to the north by Benzie County.According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92 km 2), of which 35.4 square miles (92 km 2) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km 2), or 0.56%, are water. In 1965 an ordinance which contained 13 different zoning districts was adopted. Planning and zoning functions were coordinated with the adoption of the township's first Master Plan in 1972 and subsequently the adoption of an entirely new zoning ordinance the following year. The 1973 ordinance serves as a basis for the current zoning ordinance.

South of Grand Traverse County, M-37 follows a north–south route further inland than US 31, and runs through the cities of Grand Rapids and Battle Creek. M-72 is an east–west highway in the northern part of the township, largely forming the border between Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties.
