Dowagiac (/ d ə ˈ w ɑː dʒ æ k / də-WAH-jak) is a city in Cass County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,721 at the 2020 census . [ 4 ] It is part of the South Bend – Mishawaka , IN -MI, Metropolitan Statistical Area .

The city of Dowagiac borders the township to the southeast. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 34.2 square miles (88.6 km 2), of which 32.0 square miles (82.8 km 2) is land and 2.3 square miles (5.9 km 2), or 6.62%, is water. [4]
LaGrange Township is located just northwest of the center of Cass County. It is bordered by the city of Dowagiac to the northwest. The village of Cassopolis, the Cass County seat, is in the southeast part of the township. The unincorporated community of LaGrange is in the center of the township, at the west end of LaGrange Lake.
The county is named for Lewis Cass, [4] the Michigan Territorial Governor at the time the county was created in 1829. Cass later served as the United States Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, thus making a case for including Cass County as one of Michigan's "cabinet counties".
The woods are located within the 580-acre (2.3 km 2) Fred Russ Forest Experiment Station, a Michigan State University (MSU) research forest and Cass County park. The Russ Forest and Park lie where the east–west Marcellus Highway crosses Dowagiac Creek, 8 miles (13 km) east of Dowagiac .
In a traffic survey by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in 2009, the department measured the average annual daily traffic (AADT), a computation of the average traffic levels for a segment of roadway on any given day of the year. This was calculated at 3,318 vehicles over the entire length of M-152.
There are two dams in the watershed: Lower Mill Pond Dam on Dowagiac Creek upstream from the city of Dowagiac and Barron Lake Road Dam on McKinzie Creek. Pucker Street Dam was the only dam on the Dowagiac River mainstem, located 3 miles (4.8 km) upstream from the confluence with the St. Joseph River.
