William Walter Becker (May 18, 1921 – April 2, 2007) was an American hotelier. He is best known for creating the Motel 6 concept of inexpensive motel rooms.. Born in Pasadena, California, he was working as a house painter in Santa Barbara, California when he took a trip in 1960.
In 2000, Motel 6 began using Bodett for their wake-up calls. The chain hoped to bring a more personal touch to people's day by using their spokesperson's voice. [ 6 ] Bodett was also featured on the first Motel 6 podcast , released for the holidays.
The motel at 141 Long Beach Ave. first opened in 1951. The original owner, Henry de la Pena , named the motel after the U.S. Navy ship he served on in World War II.
