The library was moved to the new Capitol in Iowa City in 1857. In January 1894, the library was moved to its new quarters in the west wing of the new capitol building in Des Moines. The new library was an addition of true architectural beauty to the new capitol. Its four galleries were reached by winding stairs at either end of the room.

The state historical society remained here until their present building was completed in 1987. After a historic renovation the building was renamed in honor of Ola Babcock Miller, Iowa's first female Secretary of State. [3] The building now houses the State Library of Iowa, which has occupied space in the building since 1912.
The Chautauqua Park Historic District is located on the north side of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. [ 1 ] It is part of the Suburban Development in Des Moines Between the World Wars, 1918--1941 MPS .
