I am trying to check in for my flight from SEA - LAX - OGG set for tomorrow morning and it is not letting me check in online. I go through the entire process and I end up.
Can't check in online, incorrect birthday (BA ticket, AA flight) I'm trying to checkin online for an AA flight (and an IB connection) booked through BA. AA's records have the wrong birthday. AA web services said only BA could fix that and I must talk to an agent rather than doing something online. I called BA, which said it fixed the date.
So, the scan forces you to actually be holding the passport and thinking about it. In addition, online check-in (on the website) requires you to re-verify passport details by typing them in (which, for most people, requires looking at the actual passport), but in that case, you have to see an agent to verify documents, as noted above.

You always, always, always check in with the operating carrier (or the carrier whose name is painted on the side of the plane in the case of American Eagle/Alaska operated by Horizon or Skywest/Delta Connection/etc) of the first segment on that day/set of connecting flights. This applies both to checkin at the airport and online checkin.
Posts: 45,078. If you check the itinerary/ticket receipt that you received when making the booking, it will state the fees applicable for 1st and 2nd bags. This will give you the definitive answer. With a through booking, with 1st segment in economy and the 2nd in business, there should be no baggage fees to pay.
