The main university campus, known as Suan Sak campus (Thai: สวนสัก) or Cherng Doi (Thai: เชิงดอย), lies about five kilometres west of the city center. Set against Doi Suthep, the campus occupies a 725-acre (2.93 km 2 ) site, bounded on three sides by main shopping streets and on the fourth by the Chiang Mai Zoo .

Thailand's top three universities, Chulalongkorn, Mahidol, and Thammasat, are trending down. When it was first ranked by QS, Chulalongkorn came in at 201. In 2018 it was ranked 271. Several years ago, Mahidol was ranked 255 but now is ranked 380. Thammasat in 2012 was ranked 561 but has consistently been in the 600s since then. [51]
