Describing colors by their color terms is a denotative color task. In order to communicate colors, we generally must first convert the color into a meaningful color term or description. Anything that requires this conversion, either from color to description (color naming) or vice versa, is a denotative color task.
Denotation refers to the meaning hidden in symbols or images. A denotation is "what we see" in the picture or what is "there" in the picture. [2] According to author Clive Scott, this is another way of saying that a photograph has both a signified and a referent, is both coded and encoded.
The denotative meaning of a signifier is intended to communicate the objective semantic content of the represented thing. So, in the case of a lexical word, say "book", the intention is to do no more than describe the physical object. Any other meanings or implications will be connotative meanings.
In semiotics, signified and signifier (French: signifié and signifiant) are the two main components of a sign, where signified is what the sign represents or refers to, known as the "plane of content", and signifier which is the "plane of expression" or the observable aspects of the sign itself.
According to Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913), a sign is composed of the signifier [2] (signifiant), and the signified (signifié).These cannot be conceptualized as separate entities but rather as a mapping from significant differences in sound to potential (correct) differential denotation.

In media studies terminology, denotation is an example of the first level of analysis: what the audience can visually see on a page. Denotation often refers to something literal, and avoids being a metaphor. Here it is usually coupled with connotation which is the second level of analysis, being what the denotation represents.
