There is evidence that the Fox River valley near Silver Springs was populated by indigenous people near the end of the last ice age, 10–14,000 years ago. [1] The original 1,250 acres (510 ha) tract of land that became Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1969, and has been open since January of that year.
The dam was originally to be called Monduran Dam. However, the Queensland Water Commissioner, Fred Haigh, had been a major driving force behind the dam and, following his sudden death on 15 July 1974, the Queensland Cabinet decided to rename the dam in his honour in 1979, retaining the name Monduran for the lake it created.
The lake is popular for fishing and water sports; there are no boating restrictions on the lake. There are picnic facilities near the dam and a range of accommodation is available at the Lake Monduran Holiday Park. [22] The Monduran Anglers and Stocking Association Inc stock the lake with barramundi and Australian bass. [22]
This is a list of lakes and reservoirs in the U.S. state of Illinois. The lakes are ordered by their unique names, (i.e. Lake Smith or Smith Lake would both be listed under "S"). Swimming, fishing, and/or boating are permitted in some of these lakes, but not all.
Another view of Dawson Lake, north end. The centerpiece of Moraine View is the 158 acre (0.6 km 2) Dawson Lake, an artificial reservoir built in 1962-1963. Fish stocked in the lake by the DNR include largemouth bass, bluegill (the state fish of Illinois), sunfish, bullhead, crappie, channel catfish, walleye, yellow perch and northern pike.
The "Site M" power plant would have burned high-sulfur Illinois coal. Due to the passage of the federal Clean Air Act, the use of Illinois coal for electrical power purposes became less economically attractive to Commonwealth Edison in the 1980s and 1990s. After holding the land in 1974-1993, the utility agreed to sell it to the state of Illinois.
Trails totaling 7.75 miles (12 km) wind through wooded areas. The Madigan Salt Creek bottomlands contain one of Illinois's largest American sycamore trees. Outside the creek bed, the conservation area contains several groves of white oak and hickory, typical of central Illinois. The white oak is the state tree of Illinois.
