Lake Monduran forms much of the western boundary of the locality. The lake is the impoundment of the Kolan River by the Fred Haigh Dam (also known as the Monduran Dam). The river flows from the dam in the west of the locality through the locality to the east, where then forms the boundary between neighbouring localities Bucca and Damascus.
The Fred Haigh Dam (also called Monduran Dam) is a dam in the Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. It was constructed across the Kolan River in 1978 creating Lake Monduran . The dam's catchment area, north of Bundaberg in Queensland, covers 1308 km2. [ 2 ]
From this point the river flows south by east and enters Lake Monduran, formed in 1978 by the damming of the river in order to mitigate severe flooding in the river's lower reaches. [4] The river then flows east and then finally north by east and reaches its mouth north of Moore Park.
The east of Kolonga is bounded by Lake Monduran, the impoundment of the Fred Haigh Dam. [3] The Bruce Highway passes through the locality from Takilberan in the south to Lowmead to the north. Shortly after the highway enters from the south, Kalpowar Road branches off to Gaeta in the west. [3] The land use is grazing on native vegetation. [3]
McPherson, who went by the same nickname, was captured at Monduran Station, 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of town. [10] Gin Gin Post Office opened on 15 March 1875. [11] The town was first surveyed in 1880. [2] Gin Gin Provisional School opened on 26 June 1882.
Most of the locality is in the Gladstone Region but a small southern part on the shores of Lake Monduran is in the Bundaberg Region. Despite the town itself being in the Gladstone Region local government area, Rosedale is closer to Bundaberg than Gladstone.
