The Epsom Handicap is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, under handicap conditions over a distance of 1,600 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia in early October. [1]
It is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres), about 1½ miles, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June. It is the second-oldest of the five Classic races, after the St Leger .
The event is named after Diomed, the inaugural winner of Epsom's most famous race, the Epsom Derby. It was established in 1971, although it could be regarded as a continuation of a previous event, the St James Stakes. The Diomed Stakes is now held on the second day of Epsom's two-day Derby Festival meeting, the same day as the Epsom Derby.

Inaugurated in 1846 it originally attracted top-class racehorses in the 19th and early 20th century, but today its importance has been eclipsed by larger stakes races with more valuable purses.
