The first-generation single VANOS system adjusts the timing of the intake camshaft to one of two positions — e.g. the camshaft is advanced at certain engine speeds. [2] [3] VANOS was first introduced in 1992 on the BMW M50 engine used in 3 and 5 Series. In 1998 single infinitely variable VANOS was introduced on the BMW M62 V8 engine. [2]
This sensor is one of the two most important sensors in modern-day engines, together with the camshaft position sensor. As the fuel injection (diesel engines) or spark ignition (petrol engines) is usually timed from the crank sensor position signal, failing sensor will cause an engine not to start or will cut out while running.
The BMW M43 is an SOHC four-cylinder petrol engine which was produced from 1991-2002. [1] The M43 powered base-model cars, while higher performance models at the time were powered by the BMW M42 and BMW M44 DOHC engines. The M43 was produced at the Steyr engine plant. [2] A version using natural-gas was produced for the E36 318i and the E34 518i
A successor to the BMW M60, the M62 features an aluminium engine block [2] and a single row timing chain. [3] In 1998, a Technical Update included VANOS (variable valve timing) for the intake camshafts. The S62 engine is the BMW M high performance version of the M62, which was released in the E39 M5, BMW Z8, Ascari KZ1, and the Ascari A10.
The BMW N73 is a naturally aspirated V12 petrol engine which replaced the BMW M73 and was produced from 2003–2016. It was used in the BMW 7 Series (E65) and Rolls-Royce Phantom VII. The N73 was the world's first production V12 engine to use gasoline direct injection. [1]
This was BMW's first engine to use variable valve timing. [2] Called single VANOS by BMW, the system adjusted the phasing of the intake camshaft. [3] The M50 began to be phased out following the introduction of the M52 engine in 1994. The E36 M3 is powered by the S50 engine series, which is a high output version of the M50.

For more lift, the intermediate arm is moved closer to the camshaft, which increases the camshaft profile acting on the intermediate arm. [ 5 ] First-generation Valvetronic systems can decrease the valve lift to a minimum of 0.3 mm, while second- and third-generation Valvetronic can decrease the lift to as little as 0.18 mm.
