Located near the kapok tree by what is now the Museum of Fine Arts, the Morean Arts Center began in 1917 as the Art Club of St. Petersburg. It remained there until a merger in 1972 with the Art Center Association, where it moved to 7th Street and took on the new name The Arts Center.

The museum was founded by Mary Wheeler Eaton [1] in 1920 as the St. Petersburg Memorial Historical Society. The city of St. Petersburg granted the organization the site after the 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane destroyed the aquarium standing on the land. It is the oldest museum in Pinellas County. [2]
A museum of the city's history was established in 1908 as the Museum of Old Saint Petersburg . It became the City Museum in 1918, and then the Museum of History and Development of Leningrad in 1938. In 1951 it was renamed the Museum of Architecture of Leningrad, and in 1953 it became the State Museum of the History of Leningrad.
