The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is a rite within the broader context of Freemasonry.It is the most widely practiced Rite in the world. [1] [2] [3] In some parts of the world, and in the Droit Humain, it is a concordant body and oversees all degrees from the 1st to 33rd degrees, while in other areas, a Supreme Council oversees the 4th to 33rd degrees.
12th Degree: Sublime Maître de l'Anneau Lumineux (Sublime Master of the Luminous Ring). The 12th grade was derived from the Rite des Négociates, the academy of the Sublime Masters of the Luminous Ring, which was absorbed by the Philosophical Scottish Rite in 1784 and by the Atelier de Douai: La Parfaite Union.
A Rite, within the context of Freemasonry, refers to a comprehensive system of degrees that hold the capability to initiate and advance a newcomer through various stages of Masonic knowledge and experience. In some cases, a Master Mason can be invited to join a different rite after having reached Mastery to further his knowledge.
The degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite vary from one jurisdiction to the next. The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and Southern Jurisdiction , each have their own lists of degrees, as well as Scottish Rite jurisdictions in France, Canada, England and Wales.
Most of the thirty-three degrees of the Scottish Rite existed in parts of previous degree systems. [4] In 1767, the Ineffable Lodge of Perfection had been chartered in Albany, NY, and awarded up to the 25th Degree. [5] Similar bodies were formed in Philadelphia and Charleston awarding degrees up to the 25th, but all had died out by 1800. [2]
