Frances Xavier Cabrini MSC (Italian: Francesca Cabrini (birth name), July 15, 1850 – December 22, 1917), also known as Mother Cabrini, was a prominent Italian-American religious sister in the Roman Catholic Church. She was the first American to be recognized by the Vatican as a saint.
It served the Diocese of Omaha as its cathedral church until St. Cecilia's Cathedral was substantially completed in 1916. The church was designed by Omaha architect Thomas Rogers Kimball. Cabrini took religious vows in 1877 and added Xavier (Saverio) to her name to honor the Jesuit saint, Francis Xavier, the patron saint of missionary service. When the orphanage closed in 1880, Cabrini and seven other women who had taken religious vows with her founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (M.S.C.). [1]
