The films are all produced in Dzongkha language, the national language of Bhutan. Bhutanese films have gained a vast popularity amongst its citizens in the recent times due to various available multi media. Dzongkha movies contain many songs for audience attentions. Bhutanese movies are now shot in countries as far away as America and Australia.
In 1999, Tshering Wangyel released the first commercially successful movie in Dzongkha language, Rewaa (Hope), a love story where two college boys fall for the same girl. As one critic put it, "the commercial Bhutanese film industry was born." [4] Wangyel went on to produce some 50 movies and died of pneumonia while making his last film.
The Monk and the Gun is a 2023 drama film directed, written and co-produced by Pawo Choyning Dorji, [8] and starring Tandin Wangchuk, Deki Lhamo, Pema Zangmo Sherpa, Tandin Sonam, Harry Einhorn, Choeying Jatsho, Tandin Phubz, Yuphel Lhendup Selden and Kelsang Choejay. [9]
Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom (Dzongkha: ལུང་ནག་ན) is a 2019 Bhutanese drama film directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji in his feature directorial debut. The film had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. [1] It was a nominee for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.
This is based on a true story of two lovers, Singye and Galem which happened in the early 1940s. Their story originated from Punakha which used to be the former capital of Bhutan. Singye works in the Punakha Dzong(Fortress/castle) as a messenger and Galem is an ordinary farm girl who is into weaving traditional clothes.
One, Tandin Wangchuk as Tashi, is a Bhutanese alt-rock star. The villagers in Ura are mostly actual villagers of Ura. The lama is indeed the actual (and only) village lama, Kelsang Choejay.
