Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song's lyrics relate two stories: one is a story of New York City police shooting a boy "right through the heart" because they mistook him for someone else, and the second of a ten-year-old girl who dies in an alley of a drug overdose. The title of the album, and certainly the song AMY, were inspired by his breakup with Amy Lombardi, but it's possible other songs were inspired by Carrie Hamilton. Carrie Hamilton died in 2002, and is mentioned in the liner notes of Demolition, so he must have dated her around the time Heartbreaker was written/recorded.
