The airport opened on May 12, 1968, as Arapahoe County Airport, and was renamed on July 13, 1984. The new name reflects Colorado's admission to the Union as the 38th state in 1876, the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1985 a new control tower was built.

It was 1973, and Grapevine Mayor William Tate was 31 and the Metroplex was home to the new Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Tate boarded a plane with other officials from Tarrant County and took flight.
