The union originated in the 19th century as the Regular Operative House Painters' Society. In 1890, it was renamed as the Dublin Metropolitan House Painters; although it was de-registered in 1906, it appears to have continued in existence and re-registered in 1911. Membership at this time was low, peaking at 600 in 1897 and 1899.
Mark Colin Braunias (20 August 1955 – 17 December 2024) was a New Zealand semi-abstract painter who experimented with quilt making and glass blowing. He won the $25,000 Parkin Drawing Prize (2021) and two Wallace Art awards, and his work is held in important national art collections including Te Papa Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Sarjeant Art Gallery.

The Society of Dublin Painters was founded in 1920 by Paul and Grace Henry, Mary Swanzy, Letitia Marion Hamilton, Jack B. Yeats, [1] and Harry Clarke. As the original meeting notes have been lost, there is some uncertainty as to which artists were there at the inaugural meeting.
