[6] The Gasconade Bridge train disaster was a rail accident that took place in Gasconade on November 1, 1855, when the Gasconade bridge collapsed under the weight of the O'Sullivan locomotive. Thirty-one people were killed.
In 1828, the Gasconade County seat was moved from Bartonville to Mount Sterling due to flooding problems from the Gasconade River in the low-lying town. In 1843, county residents voted to move the county seat again, this time to the larger city of Hermann, located at the Missouri River. [2]
