William Henry Purnell (March 4, 1826 – March 30, 1902) was a Maryland lawyer who served as the Comptroller of Maryland (1856–1861), Union officer during the American Civil War and later as President of the reorganized University of Delaware and of Hood College.
The position was renamed in 1852 to account for its statewide coverage. Since the Maryland Constitution of 1851, the Treasurer has been elected by both houses of the Maryland General Assembly. The term length of treasurers was initially two years, but was increased to four years in 1922. [2]
