The Bloom Energy Server or Bloom Box is a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power generator made by Bloom Energy, of Sunnyvale, California, that takes a variety of input fuels, including liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons [1] produced from biological sources, to produce electricity at or near the site where it will be used.
On August 17, 2011, it was announced that the PureCell Model 400 system fleet had reached 200,000 hours of field operation. [6] In September 2013, ClearEdge Power announced that its 400-kW stationary fuel cell surpassed 1,000,000 hours of field operation. [7] Today, PureCell Model 400 system fleet has over 12 million hours of field operation. [8]
Advantages of this class of fuel cells include high combined heat and power efficiency, long-term stability, fuel flexibility, low emissions, and relatively low cost. The largest disadvantage is the high operating temperature which results in longer start-up times and mechanical and chemical compatibility issues.
