Radio broadcasting began in New Zealand in 1922, and is now dominated by almost thirty radio networks and station groups. The Government has dominated broadcasting since 1925, but through privatisation and deregulation (in 1989) has allowed commercial talk and music stations to reach large audiences.
Mix (formerly Mix 98.2), was a reincarnation of Easy Mix, Viva and Easy Listening, and Radio Sport was replaced by Gold on 1 July 2020. The now-defunct Kiwi FM was previously Channel Z. The Wolf and Today FM ( formerly Magic Talk and Radio Live ) were closed.
Newstalk ZB is a nationwide New Zealand talk-radio network operated by NZME Radio. It is available in almost every radio market area in New Zealand, and has news reporters based in many of them. In addition to talkback, the network also broadcasts news, interviews, music, and sports.

Other stations such as Radio New Zealand National have a large component of talk-based content but do not have talk-back (i.e. listener phone-ins). Newstalk ZB is the New Zealand market leader, but Radio Live is continuing to try to establish itself with a greater presence in the talk radio market since its inception in 2005.
There are 16 AM radio broadcast stations in Auckland, broadcasting on 15 frequencies. NZME Radio, Radio New Zealand, and Rhema Media each operate two stations (the latter two operators sharing a frequency for one of their stations).
