Anthony Giddens, Baron Giddens MAE (born 18 January 1938) is an English sociologist who is known for his theory of structuration and his holistic view of modern societies. He is considered to be one of the most prominent modern sociologists and is the author of at least 34 books, published in at least 29 languages, issuing on average more than one book every year.
Sociologist Anthony Giddens adopted a post-empiricist frame for his theory, as he was concerned with the abstract characteristics of social relations. [according to whom?] This leaves each level more accessible to analysis via the ontologies which constitute the human social experience: space and time ("and thus, in one sense, 'history'.") [1]: 3 His aim was to build a broad social theory ...
In sociology, ontological security is a stable mental state derived from a sense of continuity in regard to the events in one's life. [1] Anthony Giddens (1991) refers to ontological security as a sense of order and continuity in regard to an individual's experiences. [5] In the natural sciences, scientists try to understand and theorize about the way the natural world is structured. The understanding is one-way; that is, while we seek to understand the actions of minerals or chemicals, chemicals and ...
— Anthony Giddens, The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration [6] While one may regard functionalism as a logical extension of the organic analogies for societies presented by political philosophers such as Rousseau , sociology draws firmer attention to those institutions unique to industrialized capitalist society ...
In the duality, the agency has much more influence on its lived environment than past structuralist theory had granted. The key to Giddens' explanation is his focus on the knowledgeability of the agent and the fact that the agency cannot exist or be analysed separately from its structure. They can only exist as a duality.
The structure is said to have both structural and individual qualities. Giddens refers to these structural modalities as "rules" and "resources" respectively. In application, Giddens is separating himself from other structuralists by acknowledging the enabling functions that the structure provides. A case of a "rule" is the act of obeying a law.
