The San Mateo County Libraries (SMCL), formerly San Mateo County Library, is a public library system and Joint Powers Authority headquartered in San Mateo, California. [5] Its motto is "Open for Exploration". It is a member of the Peninsula Library System. It serves the smaller cities of San Mateo County who do not have a city library.

It is an independent city library and part of the Peninsula Library System, [4] a consortium of city, county, and community college libraries in San Mateo County. The library holds approximately 166,000 volumes and has 29,000 borrowers. In the fiscal year 2007–2008, the library circulated 687,000 items.
By 1932, the Library operated on a budget of $25,000 and had a total of 30 branch libraries. In December 1932, the County Library assumed responsibility for library service to all County schools except those in San Jose, Palo Alto, and Santa Clara City. During the 1950s, Santa Clara County experienced tremendous growth and urbanization.
In 1903 a grant from Andrew Carnegie was received in the amount of $10,000 for the construction of a public library. Dodge & Dolliver of San Francisco (whose work included the San Mateo County Courthouse and St. John's Presbyterian Church in San Francisco) was to design the first phase of the library. [2]
