In contrast to the 1st Louisiana Native Guards organization, all field and line officers of the United States Colored Troops were white. At the war's end, approximately 100 of the original 1,000 members of the First Louisiana Native Guard still remained in uniform in either the 73rd or 74th Regiments.
The 1st Louisiana Native Guard was a Confederate Louisianan militia that consisted of Creoles of color. Formed in 1861 in New Orleans, Louisiana , it was disbanded on April 25, 1862. Some of the unit's members joined the Union Army's 1st Louisiana Native Guard , which later became the 73rd Regiment Infantry of the United States Colored Troops.

The 2nd Louisiana Regiment Native Guard Infantry was a regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. [1] It was organized in New Orleans and was tasked with defending the city until being redeployed to Ship Island in Mississippi.

The 1st Louisiana Native Guard, one of many Louisiana Union Civil War units, was formed in New Orleans after the city was taken and occupied by Union forces. It was formed in part from the Confederacy's former unit of the same name , which had been made up of property-owning free people of color ( gens de couleur libres ). [ 17 ]
