English writer Penelope Fitzgerald's historical novel The Blue Flower is based on Novalis's early life. [7] In John le Carré 's 1968 novel A Small Town in Germany , the character Bradfield says, "I used to think I was a Romantic, always looking for the blue flower" (Pan edition, p. 286 – chap. 17).
Various folk cultures and traditions assign symbolic meanings to plants. Plumbago auriculata, the Cape leadwort, [2] blue plumbago or Cape plumbago, is a species of flowering plant in the family Plumbaginaceae, native to South Africa and Mozambique. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The specific epithet auriculata means "with ears", referring to the shape of the leaves.

Houstonia caerulea is a perennial herb [2] that produces showy flowers approximately 1 cm (0.39 in) across. These flowers are four-parted with pale blue petals and a yellow center. The foliage is a basal rosette with spatula-shaped leaves. [2] Stems are up to 20 cm (7.9 in) tall with one flower per stalk.
