The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, with 1000 rooms on 13 levels, and over 130,000 square metres (1,400,000 sq ft) of floor space, [2] is one of the largest palaces in the world by floor area. It was the winter residence of the Dalai Lama until 1959.
The Potala Palace is a dzong fortress in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It was the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas from 1649 to 1959, has been a museum since then, and a World Heritage Site since 1994. The palace is named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. [1]

The village of Zhol is located below the southern face of the Potala Palace. Rectangular in plan, it is surrounded by a wall on three sides, the fourth being occupied by the base of the hill where the palace stands. In the middle of each of the three sides, there is an entrance building: the main entrance, eastern entrance and western entrance.
