Holland was a son of Sir Robert de Holland of Upholland, Lancashire, and Elizabeth, daughter of William de Samlesbury. Holland was a member of the noble [citation needed] Holland family and a favourite official of Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster, and was knighted by 1305.
