The following is a list of the 64 schools that fielded men's ice hockey teams in NCAA Division I in the most recent 2023–24 season, plus the 44 schools that fielded women's teams in the de facto equivalent of Division I, the NCAA's National Collegiate division.
Bemidji returned to Division I in 1999 as a charter member of College Hockey America, and moved to the WCHA for 2010–11. The Beavers were among the schools that revived the CCHA in 2021. The 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began on October 6, 2023, and concluded with the NCAA championship on April 13, 2024. This was the 76th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship is being held, and is US college hockey's 130th year overall.
There are 64 men's college ice hockey programs competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. Each program employs a head coach. As of the 2021–22 season, the longest-tenured head coach is Rick Gotkin of Mercyhurst, who has been head coach since 1988. There are six new head coaches for the 2022–23 season. [1]
Five institutions, all Division II members, fielded teams in a Division I sport for the first time in the 2024–25 school year. LeMoyne–Owen and Rockhurst added men's volleyball; Menlo , Roosevelt , and Vanguard , which played that sport in the NAIA in 2023–24, aligned fully with the NCAA.
