The Mellon College of Science was founded in 1967, when the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. The scientific faculty and staff of both institutions became part of the new college, then named the Mellon College of Engineering and Science.

The DeRoys moved from Pittsburgh to Detroit, but in 1923, rather than retiring, Aaron founded the Aaron DeRoy Motor Car Company, which distributed Hudson-Essex automobiles. Aaron DeRoy continued to lead the DeRoy Motor Car Company until his death in an automobile accident in 1935.
The Pittsburgh building was erected in February 1912, as the institute's new administrative building. The building was funded by a donation of $125,000 from the Alumni Association of Pittsburgh, which is what the building is named for. The building was designed by W. G. Wilkins, a Pittsburgh alumnus, who donated his services to this project.
