Dr. Florenz Ziegfeld Sr (1841–1923), founded the college in 1867 as the Chicago Academy of Music. The institution has endured without interruption for one hundred and fifty-six years. [1] Born in Louisville, he first worked as a composer and arranger in Detroit before moving to Chicago around 1910.
