Tampa, Florida racing history - posted in The Nostalgia Forum: Tampa in Florida has a rich history of open wheel racing, starting in the twenties, and perhaps still ongoing? Most historic site of all has to be Plant Field, the site of the South Florida Fairgrounds, it was a mainstay of IMCA Big Car racing for more than half a century! Following a query in another thread, I propose discussing ...
The forgotten Norfolk Speedway. I noticed in the world wide web that there are just few data about the Norfolk Speedwa y in which NASCAR Grand National Division raced in 1956 and 1957 (Billy Myers and Buck Baker the winners). There were also four NASCAR Convertible Division races (one in 1956 and three in 1957). It was a one third mile dirt track.

Over 2,000 racetrack supporters attended the Nashville (TN) Metro Council meeting on Tuesday night and the proposal to demolish the historic Fairgrounds Speedway was DEFEATED by a vote of 19 to 21. Reports indicate that the racetrack's future is still to be decided. Best I can tell the amendment that passed calls for developing a master plan which takes a look at all options for the fairgrounds...
The Altamont Fairgrounds opened in 1893 with the first Albany-Schenectady County Fair on land purchased the year before. It is not exactly clear when the racetrack was built, or when the first horse races took place, but according to one source at least, some form or other of auto racing took place as early as 1910.
In 1955 Coastal Speedway in Myrtle Beach opened on the old Washington Park horse track, and most of the Wilmington drivers started coming to "The Beach".Jack. 16 years ago. I drove #17 Mack Howard's first car in 1952 we were two poor guys who loved racing.
The Miller High Life 400 at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway on February 23, 1986 is historic for a number of reasons: * Kyle Petty's 1st Winston Cup Win * 1st and only time in NASCAR history a Cup driver won at a track where both his father & grandfather won * 1st Wood Brothers win since the 1983 season * 1st use of a new NASCAR lineup system for a qualifying rainout * 5 cars left out of...
